Traditional drum for practice with brocade bag and ribbon
In Tibet, the hand drum came into Buddhist mythology together with a bone trumpet from the pre-Buddhist religion of Bön. In the Tibetan Buddhist culture, hand drums are used in ritual music in honor of the Dharmapalas (protective deities). The rituals include walking around the stupa and dances in which the dancer wants to summon the dakinis with the damaru in his hand. Finally, they are also used in various ceremonies.
