For Garchen Rinpoche, "The 37 Exercises of the Bodhisattvas" are a close companion and his most important treasure. Through the practice of this mental training, he was able to take his tormentors to his heart during the 20 years he spent in Chinese captivity. His teachings on this are permeated by the realization of this practice.
The 37 exercises were written in the 14th century by Thogme Sangpo (1295–1369), a Lamrim and Lojong master in the tradition of the Indian master Atisha (982–1054). Thogme Sangpo's work is the essence of Lojong - the mental training that leads to the development and complete unfolding of compassion and bodhicitta.
